What you need to know ~ Top Tips
Understanding and choosing your smart battery and solar PV options can be overwhelming, let us explain some essential info in plain English
An inverter is an essential piece of equipment required with your Solar PV system. Solar panels generate Direct Current (DC) electricity, whilst homes and the grid operate on Alternating Current (AC). The inverter converts this DC into usable AC, acting as your solar pv system's "brain" to monitor performance, manage power and ensure efficiency.
A smart battery is an optional add on to your system. It is one of the most expensive parts of your system, but we do recommend it as the better investment. The smart battery stores electricity that can be used in other parts of the day, such as at night to charge your electric car, if you have one. We typically provide 5kW and 10 kW batteries dependent on the size of your home/property and your needs.
Smart batteries and inverters are best mounted near each other; ideally in a garage, utility space or a plant room.
It is advised that smart batteries are not placed in attics as they require sufficient ventilation to be able to cool down.
Smart batteries and inverters can be mounted inside or outside. Though certain brands are not suitable for outdoor use and others are. Ferm Eng can recommend the best equipment for your project.
Typically a smart battery will require a space of 1 meter in height, 60 cm in width and 30 cm in depth.
Inverters range in size dependent on your project size. But a typical domestic inverter such as the Solis Hybrid measures at 50.5 x 33.3 x 24.9 cm and will require a space of at least 15cm to 30 cm of clearance on all sides. This space is crucial for airflow and to prevent the inverter from overheating, reducing efficiency, or triggering thermal shutdowns.
